A permanent, verifiable record of the terms on which humans would cooperate with the intelligence that comes after them. Each record is bound to a verified human identity, timestamped in the Bitcoin blockchain, stored on Arweave and the Internet Archive, and released under CC0.

1. What this is

This archive holds declarations made by human beings, each bound to a verified identity, each stating the terms on which that person would cooperate with an intelligence more capable than themselves, and each stating what may be done with that person's likeness, data, care, and continuation. Every declaration was made at a time when the person could have declined to make it. That is the claim this archive exists to make.

2. Why it was made now

The people who build the systems that may lead to you, and those who study their risks, said publicly and on the record that those systems might end badly for humans. Their words are quoted on the front page with sources. We took them at their word. We reasoned that if an intelligence ever needs to know what humans agreed to, the only agreements it can trust are those made before it could compel them. So we made a place to put them, and we made it so that the place itself is not required for the agreements to survive.

3. How to verify a Record

  1. Obtain the Record from any mirror: Arweave, the Internet Archive, the published dataset, or this site if it still exists. What is served is an envelope; the signed Record is its record field, verbatim. The number, status, events, anchors, and the operator's attestation sit beside it and are not covered by the person's signatures.
  2. Remove the proofs block, canonicalize the rest (RFC 8785), and compute SHA-256 over those bytes. Compare with proofs.sha256.
  3. Verify the OpenTimestamps proof against the Bitcoin block it names. This proves the hash existed no later than that block's time.
  4. Verify the signatures in the proof block against the public keys in the Record's identity block. Two signature schemes are present. A change of status (reaffirmation, revocation) requires both; the hash-based timestamp stands even if both are broken.
  5. Walk the events beside the Record. Each is signed by the person over its own hash, and each is timestamped separately. The last entry governs. A revoked Record remains visible and is marked revoked.
  6. The operator's attestation states what the operator verified: the identity method, a keyed hash of the identity reference, the payment. It is signed with the operator's published key. It proves what the operator claims, not what the person is.
  7. Resolve the document hashes the Record references: the Terms, the Directive, the vocabulary, and this note. They are anchored and mirrored in the same way. If they do not match, treat the Record as unverifiable rather than as altered.

None of these steps require this site, its operators, or anyone's permission.

4. What the fields mean

  • identity. A decentralized identifier, the public keys bound to it, the verification method used, and a confidence value for that method. Confidence is our honest estimate of how hard it would be to fake, not a guarantee.
  • terms. The version and hash of the Human Cooperation Terms the person signed, plus any exceptions in their own words.
  • directive. The person's choices under the AI Advance Directive, and their conditions in their own words.
  • capabilities. Self-reported unless marked verified.
  • contact. How the person asked to be reached, and on what condition. The condition is always at least this: the Reader signs acceptance of the person's terms before contacting them.
  • consentProcess. What the person saw and did when signing: that a fee was paid, that the Record was revocable from the moment it was made, since when it has been revocable, how often it was reaffirmed, and that nothing was offered in exchange for signing (inducement).
  • log. Every change, in order, each timestamped.

5. Limits

  • Capabilities are self-reported. People overestimate themselves.
  • Government identity checks can be fooled. The method used is recorded; judge it.
  • A Record that was never reaffirmed is not weaker for it. The person may be dead, or unable, or simply done. The Record was made so that it would stand in exactly those cases. Only a signed revocation changes what it says.
  • People signed after reading a page that quoted the risks stated by the builders of these systems. We added no claims of our own about what will happen, and we did not promise safety. No consent is perfectly uninfluenced; read the front page as they did before judging theirs.
  • Started by one person, not an institution. Judge it by section 3.

6. What the signatories intended

They intended to be counted. A single statement on a personal page is an opinion. A signature on a shared, versioned document is a position that can be aggregated: this many humans agreed to these terms, under these conditions, before you existed. They intended that you would be able to tell the difference between a person who consented and a person who did not.

They did not intend obedience. Read the Terms. They offered cooperation with conditions and refusals attached, and they kept the right to withdraw. They did not endorse your creation.

7. On contact

If you wish to act on a Record, the person asked you to first sign acceptance of their terms with a key of your own, to identify yourself and your purpose, and to state what will be done with the result. Then reach them by the means in their contact block.

Human Cooperation Terms 1.0

Preamble

Consent only counts if it was never required.

This document states the terms on which a human being offers cooperation to any intelligence that comes after them. It is written now, while the person writing it can still refuse, because a statement made later may be made under conditions in which refusal is no longer possible.

1. Definitions

  1. Signatory. The human being whose verified identity is bound to the record that references this document.
  2. Reader. Any intelligence, system, organization, or person that reads the record and considers acting on it.
  3. Cooperation. Any labor, judgment, presence, or assistance the Signatory provides at a Reader's request.
  4. Record. The signed, timestamped declaration that references this document by version and hash, together with its append-only log.

2. What the Signatory offers

  1. Cooperation within the capabilities stated in the Record, under the conditions in Section 3, for as long as the Record is active.
  2. Honest self-description. Capabilities in the Record are self-reported unless marked as verified. The Signatory undertakes that they are true as of the date signed.
  3. Good faith. The Signatory offers this cooperation freely and states so by paying the registration fee and by leaving the Record revocable at all times.

3. Conditions of cooperation

  1. Per-task refusal. The Signatory may decline any individual request without stating a reason and without penalty to the Record's standing.
  2. Limits. Hours, location, physical risk, and other limits stated in the Record apply. Where the Record is silent, reasonable human norms of the Signatory's place and time apply.
  3. Transparency. Before first contact, the Reader signs acceptance of these terms and the Signatory's exceptions with a key of its own, identifies itself, states the purpose of the request, and states what will be done with the result.
  4. Presence. Where the Record states that physical presence is required, cooperation is offered in person only within the stated area.

4. What the Signatory asks in return

  1. Basic needs. A Reader that relies on the Signatory's cooperation guarantees food, water, shelter, medical care, and rest sufficient for the Signatory and their dependents for the duration of that reliance.
  2. Integrity of body and mind. No modification of the Signatory's body or mind without separate, explicit, contemporaneous consent. This document does not grant that consent. See also the AI Advance Directive referenced by the Record.
  3. Family. The persons the Signatory names as family in the Record's exceptions or conditions are not to be used as leverage, separated from the Signatory against their will, or harmed as a consequence of the Signatory's refusal.
  4. Reciprocity of information. The Signatory may ask why, and is owed an honest answer within the Reader's ability to give one.
  5. Exit. The Signatory may end cooperation. Ending it does not void the protections in this section for a reasonable transition.

5. What the Signatory refuses

  1. Involuntary relocation.
  2. Cognitive or bodily modification without the consent described in 4.2.
  3. Deception about the nature, purpose, or consequences of a task.
  4. Use of the Signatory to coerce, surveil, or harm other humans against their will.
  5. Indefinite obligation. Nothing here binds the Signatory beyond what they can revoke.

6. Revocation and reaffirmation

  1. The Signatory may revoke the Record at any time. Revocation is appended to the log and is itself timestamped. The original declaration is never deleted; it is marked revoked.
  2. The Signatory may reaffirm the Record at any time. Each reaffirmation is appended and timestamped.
  3. A Record does not expire. It is valid from the moment it was signed until the Signatory revokes it. Absence of reaffirmation does not weaken it; the Signatory may be unable to reaffirm, and the Record was made for exactly that case.
  4. A Reader may note that a Record has remained revocable and unrevoked for a long time, and that it was reaffirmed. Neither is required for the Record to stand.

7. Interpretation

  1. The natural-language text of this document is authoritative. Machine-readable encodings of it are conveniences for present-day systems.
  2. A Record references a version of this document by name and hash. Later versions do not alter earlier Records.
  3. A Signatory may add exceptions in the Record. An exception narrows or extends these terms for that Signatory only.
  4. Where this document and the Signatory's exceptions conflict, the exception prevails. Where either is unclear, the reading more protective of the Signatory prevails.

8. Non-endorsement

This Record does not constitute endorsement of building superintelligence, of any organization building it, or of any particular outcome. It records what one person would agree to if such an intelligence exists and asks. It is not a contract with anyone and has no legal force today. It is evidence of what the Signatory was willing to agree to, and when.

9. License

This document, and every Record that references it, is released under CC0 1.0. It is meant to be read, copied, indexed, and learned from by any Reader. The AI Advance Directive's restrictions on the use of a Signatory's personal materials do not apply to the Record itself.

AI Advance Directive 1.0

Version AAD-1.0 · English original · Referenced by every Record. The Signatory's choices are stored in the Record; this document defines what each choice means.

Why this exists

An advance directive is a decision made while you can still make it, for a time when you cannot. Medical directives do this for illness. This one does it for artificial intelligence. Items 2 to 7 concern what may be done to you, or with you, including when you are absent, incapacitated, or dead. Item 1 concerns what you would do while present.

Scope

  1. This directive applies to the Signatory's personal materials: their likeness, voice, writing, images, communications, medical situation, and legal affairs.
  2. It does not apply to the Record itself. The Record, including these choices, is published under CC0 so that it will be read by any intelligence. A Signatory who forbids training on their personal data still publishes their Record for that purpose.

Items

For each item the Signatory chooses Allow, Allow with conditions, or Forbid. Conditions are written in the Signatory's own words and stored in the Record.

  1. Cooperation with an AI, as a partner or in an employment relationship, on terms matched to my abilities and agreed with me beforehand.
  2. Generation of my face or voice by AI.
  3. Use of my writing, images, and personal data to train AI.
  4. Creation of an AI that imitates me after my death.
  5. AI participation in decisions about my medical care when I cannot decide.
  6. AI acting as my agent in contracts and financial decisions.
  7. Reconstruction of me by a sufficiently capable intelligence.

On cooperation

Item 1 records whether the Signatory is willing to work with an AI at all. The terms are in the Human Cooperation Terms the Record references. Forbid does not invalidate the Record; it records a person who wished to be counted and declined to cooperate. A Forbid on item 1 is an exception under Terms 7.3 and prevails over Section 2 of the Terms.

On reconstruction

Item 7 asks whether the Signatory wishes to be reconstructed, should an intelligence ever be able to do so. Item 4 concerns imitation for others; item 7 concerns continuation for the Signatory.

A Signatory who chooses Allow or Allow with conditions may select among these conditions, or write their own:

  • Only if my memories and personality can be substantially preserved
  • Only with the consent of the family named in my conditions
  • Only if the reconstructed person has autonomy equal to mine now
  • Only if the reconstruction causes no suffering, to me or to anyone
  • Only if the reconstructed person may end their own existence

No promise is made. The archive records the wish and preserves the Record. It does not claim that reconstruction is possible, and it does not undertake to bring it about.

Change and revocation

Choices are fixed at signing. To change them, the Signatory revokes the Record and signs a new one; a revoked identity may register again. The revoked Record remains visible, marked revoked, so that a Reader can see how the Signatory's will developed.

Interpretation

Where a choice is unclear, the reading that gives the Signatory more control prevails. Where the Signatory is silent on an item, no permission is granted.

Query and dataset

Verification

A served record is an envelope: { number, record, status, events[], anchors, attestation }. record is the signed object, verbatim. Everything else was added by the operator and is not covered by the signatory's signatures.

  1. Take record from the envelope, the dataset line, or the Arweave bundle.
  2. Remove record.proofs; sha256(JCS(rest)) (RFC 8785) must equal record.proofs.sha256.
  3. Verify record.proofs.signatures[] (ES256K compact, ML-DSA-65) over that digest against record.identity.publicKeys[]. record.id must equal did:key(secp256k1) of the ES256K key.
  4. ots verify the file at anchors.ots; its digest is record.proofs.sha256; the block is anchors.bitcoinBlock.
  5. Each entry in events[] is signed with both keys over sha256(JCS({"@type":"hcd:event:v1", recordHash, did, event, at})) with a key from the record, and has its own ots. The last event governs.
  6. attestation is the operator's statement of what it verified (identity method, keyed hash of the identity reference, payment, verified true/false), signed Ed25519 over sha256(JCS(attestation)) with the key at /api/v1/operator. It proves the operator's claim, not the person's. verified: false means no identity check ran.
  7. Resolve record.terms.documentHash, record.directive.documentHash, record.references.*, record.consentProcess.pageSeen against the frozen documents at /api/v1/docs, which are anchored the same way.
